Sumo in decline

It might look comic but becoming a top sumo wrestler is not for the faint-hearted.

The sport, which is over 1,000 years old, requires extreme commitment: with gruelling training and an enormous diet.

But sumo is in decline.

Revenues are falling, audiences are dwindling and the sport, which was once an icon of Japanese pride, is now dominated by foreign wrestlers.

Trông có vẻ buồn cười, nhưng trở thành một võ sỹ đấu sumo hàng đầu không phải là điều dành cho những ai yếu tim.

Môn thể thao vốn đã có hơn 1000 năm tuổi này đòi hỏi những nỗ lực cao độ, với việc tập luyện cực nhọc và chế độ ăn uống ghê gớm.

Nhưng môn võ sumo đang suy thoái.

Doanh thu tụt xuống, lượng khán giả tới xem suy giảm và môn thể thao này, từng là một biểu tượng cho niềm kiêu hãnh Nhật Bản, nay lại đang do các võ sỹ nước ngoài thống trị.
