Sequoia's winters sixteen
Silent tongue spirit
He at his father's side
the smoking battle ground
Where red and white men lay all
So many here had

The wind had around
Snow leaves upon the ground
Not leaves like from trees
said, "What can this be?"
"What's the strange thing I see?"
"From come leaves like these?"

turned to his father's eyes
And he said, "Father you're
From come such snow white leaves
With such strange marks upon squares
Not even the owl could put them there
So these snow white leaves"

His shielding his concern
Resenting the knowledge yearned
Crumbled the snow white
He said, "When I explain then it's
These are leaves, my son
The white men's leaves"

The white man takes a of black and red
And an eagle's feather the eagle's bed
And he bird track marks
And the marks on the leaves say
Carry to his brother far away
And his knows what's in his heart

They see these and they understand
The in the heart of the far off man
The enemies can't them
Sequoia's father, "Son
They weave bad medicine on these talking
Leave such to them"

Then Sequoia lightly
Followed his quietly
But so was he
If the white man on leaves
Why not the

Vanished from his face
Sequoia went from place to
But he could not
Year after he worked on and on
Till finally he cut into
The Cherokee

hair by now was white
His eyes began to lose their
But he taught all who would
That the Indian's thoughts could be written
Just as the white men's there on the
And he left us talking leaves
