Sequoia's winters were
Silent tongue clean
He walked at his father's
Across the battle ground
Where red and men lay all around
So here had died

The wind had scattered
Snow leaves upon the ground
Not leaves like leaves trees
Sequoia said, "What can be?"
"What's the strange here I see?"
"From where come leaves these?"

Sequoia turned to his eyes
And he said, "Father wise
From where come such snow white
With such strange marks upon these
Not even the wise owl put them there
So strange these white leaves"

His father shielding his
Resenting the knowledge yearned
Crumbled the snow white
He said, "When I explain it's done
These are leaves, my son
The white talking leaves"

The white man takes a berry of and red
And an eagle's feather from the bed
And he bird track marks
And the marks on the leaves say
messages to his brother far away
And his knows what's in his heart

They see marks and they understand
The truth in the of the far off man
The enemies can't hear
Sequoia's father, "Son
They weave bad medicine on talking leaves
such things to them"

Then Sequoia walking
Followed his quietly
But so was he
If the man talks on leaves
Why not the

Vanished his father's face
went from place to place
But he not forget
Year year he worked on and on
Till finally he cut stone
The alphabet

hair by now was white
His eyes began to their light
But he taught all who would
That the Indian's could be written down
Just as the white there on the ground
And he left us these leaves
