A poor orphan girl Maria
Was to market one day
She for to rest by the roadside
Where a bird with a wing lay

A few moments till she saw it
For it's feathers were with sand
But soon and wrapped it
Was in the warmth of Maria's small hand

She gave her last peso
On a cage of rushes and twine
She fed it loose corn the market
And watched it grow with time

Now the Eve service was coming
And the church shone with tinsel and
And all of the town folks brought
To lay by the manger that

were diamonds and incense
And perfumes in packages fit for a
But for one bird in a small cage
had nothing to bring

She waited till before midnight
So no one see her go in
And crying she knelt by the
For her gift was of Him

Then the Lord spoke to her through the
"Maria, brings you to me
If the bird in the cage is your
the door and let me see"

she trembled, she did as He ask her
And out of the cage the bird
Soaring up into the
On a wing had healed good as new

Just the midnight bells rang out
And the little bird to sing
A song no words could recapture
beauty was fit for a king

Now Maria felt blessed to listen
To that cascade of notes sweet and
As her offering was lifted to
By the very first song
