Words RW, trad Irish: Nancy's Whiskey 1978

At age 14 they us training
To number off by threes and give
To clean and fire the Lee and
To answer smartly sir and the boots
Me and all the other poor
Glengarry bonnets on at bugle
I never I looked good in khaki
It hurt the as well as it scratched the balls
I volunteered for the signals
To work the was a skivers joy
and on manoeuvres I'd the orders
and put confusion on the boys

To Northern for summer training
Near to Lough Foyle not far from town
To get the feel of the army
and act the bloody clown
To eat melodious beans and
To sleep on old grey blankets stiff with
and on the carsy in the
To squat in like cows with labor pains

Me and some lads broke out one
through the wire and down the lough beside
We spied some fishers in their boats
nets out on the silvery tide
They soon pulled and we got to talking
To row us over the water agree
hoist us dry shod in the boat beside them
And way across the watery waves we
to Greencastle in Southern Ireland
A street of set end to end
A couple of and several boozers
Where we fell to with our Irish friends

The black porter, strong beer and whiskey
We had a bevy as drunk as lords
and all skylarking and cutting
Till that old church clock it for four
The fishers us back over the water
and went to fish upon the morning
But we were drunk and of caution
and we were halted back through the wire
and me and the lads all defaulted
and straight upon fatigues were led
To double at our every
With our rifles held our heads

Bur my good luck was not all
I got infected in the ears
Some of hole in the two of my ear drums
Till not a single order I could
I sadly smiled and looked
While they could and shout and rage
and that's the way I would end a
I was 14 years of age
