Words RW, music trad Irish: Whiskey 1978

At age 14 gave us training
To off by threes and give salutes
To clean and fire the Lee and
To answer sir and shine the boots
Me and all the poor bastards
Glengarry bonnets on at bugle
I never thought I looked in khaki
It the pride as well as it scratched the balls
I for the signals section
To work the radios was a joy
and on I'd twist the orders
and put on the soldier boys

To Northern for summer training
Near to Foyle not far from Derry town
To get the feel of the regular
and act the bloody clown
To eat melodious beans and
To sleep on old grey stiff with stains
and on the carsy in the
To squat in rows like cows with labor

Me and some broke out one evening
through the wire and down the lough beside
We spied some fishers in their boats
nets out on the silvery tide
They soon shoreward and we got to talking
To row us the water they'd agree
They hoist us dry shod in the boat beside
And way the watery waves went we
Cross to in Southern Ireland
A street of set end to end
A couple of and several boozers
we fell to drinking with our Irish friends

The best porter, strong beer and whiskey
We had a there as drunk as lords
and all and cutting capers
Till that old clock it chimed for four
The rowed us back over the water
and went to upon the morning rise
But we drunk and devoid of caution
and we were halted climbing back the wire
and me and the lads all defaulted
and straight away fatigues were led
To double at our every
With our rifles held obove our

Bur my good was not all departed
I got in both the ears
Some kind of hole in the two of my ear
not a single order I could hear
I sadly smiled and looked
While could curse and shout and rage
and that's the way I would end a
When I was 14 of age
