JOHN A BALLAD
(Robert Burns)
There was three kings the east,
Three kings great and high,
And hae sworn a solemn oath
John should die.
took a plough and plough'd him down,
Put upon his head,
And they hae sworn a oath
John was dead.
But the cheerful Spring came on'
And show'rs began to
John got up again,
And surpris'd them all.
The sultry of Summer came,
And he thick and strong:
His head arm'd wi pointed spears,
That no one him wrong.
The Autumn enter'd mild,
he grew wan and pale;
His bendin and drooping head
Show'd he to fail.
His sicken'd more and more,
He faded into
And then his enemies
To show their rage.
taen a weapon, long and sharp,
And cut him by the
They ty'd him fast a cart,
Like a for forgerie.
They him down upon his back,
And cudgell'd him sore.
They him up before the storm,
And him o'er and o'er.
filled up a darksome pit
With to the brim,
heav'd in John Barleycorn-
There, let him or swim!
They him upon the floor,
To work him farther
And still, as signs of appear'd,
toss'd him to and fro.
They wasted o'er a flame
The marrow of his
But a miller him worst of all,
For he him between two atones.
And they hae taen his hero blood
And drank it round and
And still the more and more drank,
joy did more abound.
John was a hero bold,
Of noble
For if you do but his blood,
make your courage rise.
'Twill a man forget his woe;
'Twill all his joy:
'Twill the widow's heart to sing,
Tho the tear in her eye.
let us toast John Barleycorn,
Each man a in hand;
And may his posterity
fail in old Scotland!
TUNE: me beyond thee
