JOHN A BALLAD
(Robert Burns)
There was three kings the east,
Three both great and high,
And they hae a solemn oath
John Barleycorn die.
They took a and plough'd him down,
Put upon his head,
And hae sworn a solemn oath
Barleycorn was dead.
But the Spring came kindly on'
And show'rs to fall;
Barleycorn got up again,
And sore them all.
The suns of Summer came,
And he grew and strong:
His head arm'd wi pointed spears,
That no one him wrong.
The Autumn enter'd mild,
When he grew wan and
His joints and drooping head
Show'd he to fail.
His colour more and more,
He faded age;
And his enemies began
To show deadly rage.
taen a weapon, long and sharp,
And cut him by the
They ty'd him upon a cart,
a rogue for forgerie.
They laid him down his back,
And cudgell'd him sore.
They him up before the storm,
And him o'er and o'er.
They up a darksome pit
With to the brim,
heav'd in John Barleycorn-
There, let him or swim!
They him upon the floor,
To work him farther
And still, as of life appear'd,
toss'd him to and fro.
They wasted o'er a scorching
The of his bones;
But a us'd him worst of all,
For he him between two atones.
And they hae taen his very blood
And drank it and round;
And still the more and they drank,
joy did more abound.
John was a hero bold,
Of enterprise;
For if you do but his blood,
'Twill your courage rise.
'Twill make a man forget his
'Twill all his joy:
make the widow's heart to sing,
Tho the were in her eye.
Then let us John Barleycorn,
Each man a in hand;
And may his posterity
Ne'er in old Scotland!
