JOHN BARLEYCORN: A
(Robert Burns)
There was three kings the east,
Three kings both and high,
And they hae sworn a solemn
Barleycorn should die.
They a plough and plough'd him down,
Put upon his head,
And hae sworn a solemn oath
Barleycorn was dead.
But the cheerful Spring came on'
And show'rs began to
Barleycorn got up again,
And sore them all.
The sultry suns of came,
And he grew and strong:
His weel arm'd wi pointed spears,
no one should him wrong.
The sober enter'd mild,
When he grew wan and
His bendin joints and head
Show'd he to fail.
His colour sicken'd and more,
He faded into
And his enemies began
To show deadly rage.
They've taen a weapon, and sharp,
And cut him by the
They ty'd him upon a cart,
Like a for forgerie.
They him down upon his back,
And cudgell'd him sore.
They hung him up the storm,
And turn'd him and o'er.
They up a darksome pit
water to the brim,
They in John Barleycorn-
There, let him or swim!
They him upon the floor,
To work him woe;
And still, as signs of appear'd,
toss'd him to and fro.
They wasted a scorching flame
The of his bones;
But a us'd him worst of all,
For he crush'd him two atones.
And they hae his very hero blood
And drank it round and
And still the and more they drank,
Their joy did abound.
John Barleycorn was a bold,
Of enterprise;
For if you do but his blood,
make your courage rise.
'Twill a man forget his woe;
'Twill all his joy:
'Twill make the widow's to sing,
Tho the tear in her eye.
let us toast John Barleycorn,
Each man a in hand;
And may his posterity
fail in old Scotland!
