JOHN BARLEYCORN: A
(Robert Burns)
There was three into the east,
kings both great and high,
And they hae a solemn oath
Barleycorn should die.
They took a and plough'd him down,
Put clods his head,
And they hae sworn a oath
John was dead.
But the cheerful Spring kindly on'
And began to fall;
Barleycorn got up again,
And sore them all.
The suns of Summer came,
And he grew thick and
His head weel wi pointed spears,
That no one him wrong.
The sober enter'd mild,
When he wan and pale;
His bendin and drooping head
Show'd he to fail.
His sicken'd more and more,
He into age;
And his enemies began
To show their rage.
They've a weapon, long and sharp,
And cut him by the
ty'd him fast upon a cart,
Like a for forgerie.
laid him down upon his back,
And cudgell'd him sore.
hung him up before the storm,
And turn'd him and o'er.
They filled up a pit
water to the brim,
They heav'd in John
There, let him or swim!
laid him upon the floor,
To work him woe;
And still, as of life appear'd,
They him to and fro.
They wasted o'er a flame
The marrow of his
But a us'd him worst of all,
For he him between two atones.
And they hae taen his very blood
And it round and round;
And still the more and more drank,
joy did more abound.
John Barleycorn was a bold,
Of enterprise;
For if you do but his blood,
'Twill your courage rise.
'Twill make a man forget his
heighten all his joy:
'Twill make the heart to sing,
Tho the were in her eye.
Then let us toast Barleycorn,
man a glass in hand;
And may his posterity
Ne'er in old Scotland!
TUNE: me beyond thee
