JOHN A BALLAD
(Robert Burns)
was three kings into the east,
Three kings great and high,
And hae sworn a solemn oath
John should die.
They took a plough and him down,
Put clods his head,
And they hae sworn a oath
John was dead.
But the Spring came kindly on'
And began to fall;
John got up again,
And sore them all.
The suns of Summer came,
And he thick and strong:
His head weel wi pointed spears,
no one should him wrong.
The sober Autumn mild,
When he grew wan and
His bendin and drooping head
he began to fail.
His colour sicken'd and more,
He into age;
And then his enemies
To show their rage.
They've taen a weapon, and sharp,
And cut him by the
They ty'd him upon a cart,
Like a for forgerie.
They laid him down his back,
And him full sore.
They hung him up the storm,
And turn'd him and o'er.
filled up a darksome pit
With to the brim,
heav'd in John Barleycorn-
There, let him or swim!
They laid him the floor,
To work him farther
And still, as of life appear'd,
toss'd him to and fro.
They wasted o'er a scorching
The marrow of his
But a us'd him worst of all,
For he him between two atones.
And they hae taen his very hero
And drank it and round;
And still the and more they drank,
joy did more abound.
John Barleycorn was a bold,
Of enterprise;
For if you do but his blood,
'Twill make courage rise.
'Twill a man forget his woe;
'Twill heighten all his
'Twill make the widow's to sing,
Tho the were in her eye.
Then let us toast Barleycorn,
Each man a glass in
And may his great
Ne'er in old Scotland!
