JOHN BARLEYCORN: A
(Robert Burns)
There was kings into the east,
Three kings both and high,
And hae sworn a solemn oath
Barleycorn should die.
They took a and plough'd him down,
Put clods his head,
And hae sworn a solemn oath
John was dead.
But the cheerful Spring kindly on'
And show'rs began to
John got up again,
And sore surpris'd all.
The sultry of Summer came,
And he grew and strong:
His weel arm'd wi pointed spears,
no one should him wrong.
The sober Autumn mild,
When he wan and pale;
His bendin and drooping head
Show'd he to fail.
His sicken'd more and more,
He faded into
And then his enemies
To show their rage.
They've a weapon, long and sharp,
And cut him by the
They ty'd him upon a cart,
Like a for forgerie.
laid him down upon his back,
And him full sore.
They hung him up the storm,
And turn'd him and o'er.
filled up a darksome pit
With to the brim,
They heav'd in John
There, let him or swim!
They him upon the floor,
To work him woe;
And still, as of life appear'd,
toss'd him to and fro.
They wasted a scorching flame
The of his bones;
But a us'd him worst of all,
For he crush'd him two atones.
And they hae taen his very hero
And it round and round;
And still the more and more drank,
Their joy did abound.
Barleycorn was a hero bold,
Of noble
For if you do but his blood,
'Twill make your rise.
'Twill a man forget his woe;
'Twill heighten all his
'Twill make the widow's to sing,
Tho the tear in her eye.
Then let us toast Barleycorn,
Each man a in hand;
And may his posterity
fail in old Scotland!
