When most I wink, then do eyes best see,
For all the day they things unrespected;
But when I sleep, in they look on thee,
And darkly bright are in dark directed.
Then thou, whose shadow shadows make bright,
How thy shadow's form form happy show
To the clear day with thy clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade so!
How would, I say, mine be blessed made
By looking on in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect
Through heavy sleep on sightless doth stay!
All days are nights to see I see thee,
And nights bright days dreams do show thee me.
