When I wink, then do mine eyes best see,
For all the day they view unrespected;
But when I sleep, in dreams they on thee,
And darkly are bright in dark directed.
Then thou, whose shadows doth make bright,
How would thy form form happy show
To the clear day with thy clearer light,
When to unseeing thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed
By looking on thee in the day,
When in dead night thy imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see I see thee,
And nights bright when dreams do show thee me.
