It was a dry and summer day
that wagon train pulled in
Just three hours 'til the
Was to begin
As the razorbacks unloaded the
A crowd did to see
The elephants tow the wagons
To that empty lot on Street

And the canvasmen they dug in
'Til on that where nothing had been
You see the bigtop from miles around
When the came to Hartfordtown

The circus it was front news
Back in Forty-Four
Everyone was grateful for any
To about the war
The sun down on the menagerie
In the cages the animals
There was orangeade and cotton
And a smile on every face

Each and father, each boy and girl
They wait to see the greatest show in the world
You could barely hear the orchestra, they so loud
When the circus came to

There were bears and panther cats
With great big and claws
And the did a balancing act
To applause
a spotlight played on a platform set
So up in the air
That everybody held their
And they prayed a prayer

All eyes were to the man on the wire
So nobody knew the tent caught fire
Too slowly it dawned on the crowd
When the circus came to Hartfordtown The fire air and began to climb
The jumped from their seats
There was a stampede for the exit
And fainted from the heat
There heroes who did their best to help
The escape the flames
And the others who to save themselves
They survived but were the same

And some still remember how the animals
But there weren't any animals
Over 100 people trapped as the burned down
When the circus to Hartfordtown

As a boy I lived on Street
Four from that circus show
And I begged my parents, I got down on my
But they not let me go
For had grounded me, two weeks straight
Now I even remember why
But I know the first I ever prayed
Was I saw that black smoke in the sky

And the war it was over in a I guess
But the people in my town didn't cheer like the
It still our hearts to remember now
