It was a dry and dusty day
When that train pulled in
Just three hours the matinee
Was to begin
As the razorbacks the flats
A crowd did to see
The elephants tow the back
To that lot on Barbour Street

And the canvasmen dug right in
'Til on that where nothing had been
You could see the bigtop miles around
the circus came to Hartfordtown

The circus it was page news
Back in Nineteen
was grateful for any excuse
To forget the war
The sun beat on the menagerie
In the cages the animals
There was orangeade and candy
And a smile on kid's face

Each and father, each boy and girl
They couldn't to see the greatest show in the world
You could barely the orchestra, they cheered so loud
When the circus to Hartfordtown

There polar bears and panther cats
With great big and claws
And the did a balancing act
To jubilant
Then a spotlight on a platform set
So up in the air
That everybody held breath
And they prayed a silent

All eyes glued to the man on the wire
So knew when the tent caught fire
Too slowly it dawned on the crowd
the circus came to Hartfordtown The fire drew air and began to climb
The audience jumped from seats
There was a stampede for the exit
And some from the heat
There were heroes who did their to help
The escape the flames
And the who managed to save themselves
They survived but were the same

And still remember how the animals cried
But there weren't any animals
Over 100 people trapped as the tent down
When the came to Hartfordtown

As a boy I lived on Street
Four blocks from that circus
And I begged my parents, I got down on my
But would not let me go
For they had grounded me, two straight
Now I can't even why
But I the first time I ever prayed
Was I saw that black smoke in the sky

And the war it was in a year I guess
But the in my town didn't cheer like the rest
It still breaks our hearts to now
