It was a dry and dusty day
When that wagon train in
Just three hours the matinee
Was to begin
As the razorbacks the flats
A crowd did to see
The elephants tow the wagons
To that empty lot on Barbour

And the canvasmen dug right in
'Til on that spot nothing had been
You see the bigtop from miles around
When the came to Hartfordtown

The circus it was page news
Back in Nineteen
Everyone was grateful for any
To forget the war
The sun beat on the menagerie
In the the animals paced
There was orangeade and candy
And a on every kid's face

Each mother and father, boy and girl
They couldn't wait to see the greatest show in the
You barely hear the orchestra, they cheered so loud
When the circus to Hartfordtown

There were bears and panther cats
With great big fangs and
And the lions did a act
To applause
Then a played on a platform set
So up in the air
That everybody their breath
And they prayed a prayer

All eyes were to the man on the wire
So knew when the tent caught fire
Too slowly it dawned on the crowd
When the circus came to Hartfordtown The fire drew air and began to
The audience from their seats
There was a stampede for the exit
And some from the heat
There were heroes who did best to help
The children escape the
And the others who managed to themselves
survived but were never the same

And some remember how the animals cried
But weren't any animals inside
Over 100 trapped as the tent burned down
When the circus came to

As a boy I lived on Street
Four blocks from circus show
And I begged my parents, I got down on my
But would not let me go
For had grounded me, two weeks straight
Now I can't remember why
But I the first time I ever prayed
Was I saw that black smoke in the sky

And the war it was over in a year I
But the in my town didn't cheer like the rest
It still breaks our hearts to now
