It was a dry and summer day
When that wagon train in
Just three hours 'til the
Was scheduled to
As the razorbacks the flats
A crowd did to see
The elephants tow the wagons
To that lot on Barbour Street

And the they dug right in
'Til on that spot where nothing had
You see the bigtop from miles around
the circus came to Hartfordtown

The circus it was front news
in Nineteen Forty-Four
Everyone was grateful for any
To forget the war
The sun beat down on the
In the cages the paced
There was and cotton candy
And a on every kid's face

Each mother and father, each boy and
They couldn't wait to see the greatest show in the
You could barely the orchestra, they cheered so loud
When the circus to Hartfordtown

were polar bears and panther cats
With great big and claws
And the did a balancing act
To applause
a spotlight played on a platform set
So up in the air
That held their breath
And they a silent prayer

All eyes were glued to the man on the
So knew when the tent caught fire
Too slowly it dawned on the sold-out
When the circus came to Hartfordtown The fire air and began to climb
The audience jumped from their
There was a stampede for the exit
And fainted from the heat
There were who did their best to help
The escape the flames
And the others who managed to themselves
They survived but were never the

And some still remember how the cried
But weren't any animals inside
Over 100 people trapped as the tent down
When the came to Hartfordtown

As a boy I lived on Street
blocks from that circus show
And I begged my parents, I got on my knees
But would not let me go
For they had me, two weeks straight
Now I can't remember why
But I know the time I ever prayed
Was when I saw black smoke in the sky

And the war it was in a year I guess
But the people in my town didn't cheer the rest
It still breaks our hearts to now
