A stranger lying on a bar floor
Had drank so much he could drink no
So he asleep with a troubled brain
To that he rode on that downbound train

The engine blood was sweaty and damp
And brilliantly lit with a brimstone
And for fuel was shoveling bones
While the furnace with a thousand groans

The boiler was filled with beer
The himself was the engineer
The passengers were most a motley
Some were foreigners and he knew
men in broadcloth, beggars in rags
Handsome young and wicked old hags

As the train rushed on at a pace
Sulphuric fumes scorched their hands and
Wider and wider the grew
Faster and the engine flew
Louder and louder the crashed
Brighter and the lighting flashed

Hotter and hotter the air
Till their clothes were burned with each quivering
Then out of the din came a yell
Ha ha said the we're nearing home
Oh how the passengers shrieked pain
begged old Satan to stop that train

The stranger awoke an anguished cry
His clothes wet with sweat and his standing high
He fell on his knees on the bar floor
And prayed a like never before

And the prayers and vows were not in
For he rode that downbound train
