Beloved, gaze in own heart,
The tree is growing there;
joy the holy branches start,
And al the trembling flowers bear.
The colours of its fruit
Have dowered the stars with light;
The surety of its hidden
Has quiet in the night;
The shaking of its head
Has given the waves melody,
And made my lips and wed,
Murmuring a wizard for thee.

There the a circle go,
The circle of our days,
Gyring, to and fro
In those great ignorant ways;
Remembering all shaken hair
And how the winged dart,
Thine eyes grow full of care;
Beloved, in thine own heart.

Gaze no more in the glass
The demons, with subtle guile,
up before us when they pass,
Or only gaze a while;
For there a fatal image
That the stormy receives,
Roots half hidden snows,
Broken boughs and leaves.
For all turn to barenness
In the dim the demons hold,
The glass of weariness,
when God slept in times of old.
There, through the branches, go
The ravens of unresting
Flying, crying, to and fro,
Cruel claw and throat,
Or else stand and stiff the wind,
And their ragged wings: alas!
Thy tender eyes grow all
Gaze no more in the glass.
