It was after dark when the truck started down
The hill that leads Scranton Pennsylvania
Carrying thousand pounds of bananas
Carrying thousand pounds
Hit it big
Of

He was a driver
out on his second job
And he was carrying the next day's fruits
For everyone in that coal city
Where children without despair

In backyard slag and folks manage to eat each day
About thirty pounds of bananas
Yes, just about thirty pounds
Scream it again,
Of

He a sign that he should have seen
Saying "Shift to low gear, a fifty dollar my friend."
He was thinking perhaps about the breathed woman
Who was waiting at the end
He started down the two drop
The curving road that from the top of the hill

He was pushing on through the shortening
That ran down to the

Then he'd go home and her ease his long, cramped day away
And the smell of thousand pounds of bananas
Yes the smell of thirty thousand pounds of

But he no heed as the shivering thoughts of the nights
Delights went him
His foot the brakes to slow him down
But the pedal easy without a sound

It was funny how he had named the man
Who could him now
He was trapped a dead-end hellslide
Riding on his fear hunched
Was everyone of yellow green

Yes, there were thirty thousand of bananas

He made the sweeping curve
led into the steepest grade
And he the thankful passing bus
At ninety miles an

As he rode his last down

He said, "God, it a dream"
As he rode his tread down
And he sideswiped nineteen neat parked
Clipped off telephone poles
Hit two houses, eight trees

And blue crossed seven
It was then he lost his
Not to mention an arm or two he stopped
And he slid for hundred yards
Along the hill that leads into Pennsylvania
All those thirty pounds of bananas

You know the man who told me it on the bus
As it went up the hill out of Scranton,
He his shoulders, he shook his head
And he

And this is what he said
"Boy that must've been something
Just thirty thousand pounds of bananas"
Yes, there were thirty thousand of mashed bananas
Of bananas, bananas, just bananas, thirty thousand
Of bananas, not no now, just bananas
