So you ask me my friend
Why I am sad and
And why my brow is
Like the clouds upon the

Rein in ponies closer
And tell you all a tale
Of Carroll, partner
And his last ride on the

In a grave without a
Without a date or
My partner lies silent
In the land from I came

Long ago we together
We'd side by side
I loved him like a
And I wept Utah died

While riding up one
And our work was done
The quickly started
On a and maddening run

The boss's daughter
Who was on that side
in to stop the stampede
It was there my partner

Lenore her pony
Tried to turn the cattle
But her slipped beneath her
And she caught and held on

When we all saw that red
Each held his breath
For should her pony her
None could save the girl from

When the saw the blanket
Almost dragging on the
They maddened in a moment
And they with deafening sound

The soon saw her danger
And she her pony's face
And in her saddle
the blanket to replace

Just then she lost her
In the front of wild tide
Carroll's voice the round up
"Lie still, Lenore" he

And close up beside her
Came riding fast
But little did the poor boy
The ride be his last

often from the saddle
He had caught the trailing
To pick her up at full
Was now his only

He swung low from his
To her to his arm
We thought he'd succeeded
the girl was safe from harm

But such a strain his saddle
Had ne'er been put
And the cinches beneath him
And he fell beside

the girl fell from her saddle
She had the blanket down
It lay there close them
Where they lay upon the

Utah the blanket
And to he said
"Lie still" and quickly
Waved the red o'er his head

He the maddened cattle
Lenore, his little friend
And as the mighty rushed toward him
He to met his end

And as the came on him
His weapon quickly
He was bound to die
As all brave do

The flashed like lightning
And it sounded and clear
As the cattle rushed and him
He dropped the steer

When I broke through that circle
To where Utah lay
With a wounds and bruises
His life ebbed away

I knelt down beside him
And I knew that all was
As I him faintly whisper
"Good-bye, my Lenore"

Next at the churchyard
I the preacher say
"Don't think our kind friend
Was lost on that day

He was a much-loved
And not to die
And meet him at the round up
On the plains the sky"

So you ask me my friend
Why I am sad and
And why my is darkened
Like the clouds the hill

in your ponies closer
And I'll you all a tale
Of Carroll, partner
And his last on the trail
