So you ask me my friend
Why I am sad and
And why my brow is
the clouds upon the hill

Rein in ponies closer
And tell you all a tale
Of Carroll, partner
And his last ride on the

In a without a headstone
a date or name
My lies there silent
In the land from I came

Long ago we together
ridden side by side
I him like a brother
And I when Utah died

While riding up one
And our work was almost
The cattle started
On a wild and run

The boss's daughter
Who was riding on that
Rushed in to stop the
It was my partner died

Lenore her pony
Tried to the cattle right
But her slipped beneath her
And she and held on tight

When we all saw red blanket
Each held his breath
For her pony fail her
None could save the girl from

the cattle saw the blanket
Almost on the ground
They maddened in a moment
And they charged with sound

The soon saw her danger
And she her pony's face
And bending in her
Tried the to replace

Just then she her balance
In the of that wild tide
Carroll's voice controlled the up
"Lie still, Lenore" he

And then up beside her
Came Utah riding
But little did the boy know
The would be his last

Full from the saddle
He had the trailing rope
To pick her up at speed
Was now his hope

He low from his saddle
To her to his arm
We that he'd succeeded
the girl was safe from harm

But such a strain upon his
Had ne'er put before
And the cinches beneath him
And he fell Lenore

the girl fell from her saddle
She had dragged the blanket
It lay there close beside
they lay upon the ground

Utah took the
And to Lenore he
"Lie still" and quickly
Waved the red thing his head

He turned the cattle
Lenore, his little friend
And as the mighty herd rushed him
He to met his end

And as the herd on him
His weapon quickly
He was to die defended
As all cowboys do

The flashed like lightning
And it sounded and clear
As the cattle rushed and him
He the leading steer

I broke through that wide circle
To where Utah lay
a thousand wounds and bruises
His life ebbed away

I knelt down close him
And I knew that all was
As I him faintly whisper
"Good-bye, my Lenore"

Next morning at the
I heard the say
"Don't our kind friend Utah
Was lost on great day

He was a much-loved
And not to die
And meet him at the round up
On the beyond the sky"

So you ask me my kind
Why I am sad and
And why my is darkened
Like the upon the hill

Rein in your ponies
And I'll you all a tale
Of Utah Carroll,
And his last on the trail
