Sunscreen

cruising my blue city in a third world limousine
an overcoat, a notebook, and a bottle of sunscreen
waiting for the light so I could get things moving faster
with two hundred dollars american
and a penchant for disaster

stay sharp, party hard
I've never known the devil to sleep in a car

when I turned the corner I saw Mary in her stance
white as a museum with a switchblade in her hand
so I slowed down and shouted
"Mary, should I be believing?"
she said, "I'm working as a statue,
just pretend that I'm not breathing"

stay cool, know the rule
I've never known a fish to drown in a pool
stay sharp, party hard
I've never known the devil to sleep in a car

further up the road there was a drive by kiss and tell
I didn't know the policemen
but I knew the victim oh so well
so when the red lights started flashing
I said "Allah, saints be praised"
he swept his hand across the road
and moved me to another state

stay straight, don't relate
I've never known a cow to jump on a plate
stay cool, know the rule
I've never known a fish to drown in a pool

now I'm lost and wandering
and the fast food signs are gone
it's snowing in the desert
and there's no one to spend my money on
I don't know if I'll ever see my city shore again
at least I have my sunscreen
so I can die without a suntan
