Skimbleshanks the cat
The cat of the train

There's a down the line at eleven thirty-nine
the Night Mail's ready to depart
Saying, "Skimble, where is
Has he gone to hunt the
We find him or the train can't start"

All the and all the porters
And the station master's
be searchin' high and low
Saying, "Skimble, where is
For unless very nimble
Then the Night just can't go"

At eleven forty-two the signal overdue
And the passengers all to a man
when I would appear and I'd saunter to the rear
I'd been in the luggage van

Then he gave one flash of his eyes
And the went 'All clear'
They'd be off at for the northern part
of the Northern

Skimbleshanks, the cat
The cat of the railway

You might say that by and
It was me who was in
Of the Car Express
From the driver and the
To the bagmen cards
I would supervise all, more or less

Down the corridor he paces and examines all the
Of the travelers in the first and the
He establishes control by a regular
And he'd know at once if anything

He would you without winking
And he saw you were thinking
And it's certain he didn't approve
Of hilarity and riot so that folk were quiet
When Skimble was about and on the

You could no pranks with Skimbleshanks
He's a cat that couldn't be
So went wrong on the Northern Mail
Skimbleshanks was aboard

It was very pleasant when found their little den
With their name up on the door
And the berth was very neat with a newly sheet
And not a speck of upon the floor

There was every sort of light, you make it dark or bright
And a button you could to make a breeze
And a funny little you're supposed to wash your face in
And a crank to the window should you sneeze

the guard looked in politely and would ask you very brightly
"Do you like morning tea weak or strong?"
But I was right behind him and was to remind him
For Skimble won't let anything go

When crept into their cosy berth
And up the counterpane
They all could reflect, that it was nice
To know that they be bothered by mice
can leave all that to the railway cat
The cat of the train

Skimbleshanks, the cat
The cat of the railway

In the of the night, I was always fresh and bright
Every now and then I'd a cup of tea
With perhaps a drop of Scotch I was keepin' on the watch
Only stopping here and there to catch a

They were fast asleep at and so they never knew
That I was up and down the station
They were all the while I was busy at Carlisle
Where I met the station master elation

They might see me at Dumfries if I summoned by
If there was anything ought to know about
When they got to there they did not have to wait
For would help them to get out

And he gives you a of his long, brown tail
says "I'll see you again"
You will meet without on the Midnight Mail
The cat of the railway

You will meet without fail on the Midnight
The cat of the train
