A bright young lad, as they come,
with big-boy toys, nothing dumb.
Blazed through school with high praise;
friends and teachers all amazed.

Conquered video game,
And every just the same.

Hit the couch one big splash.

He up and on to high school,
he thought the "high" part was cool.
Gave up sports and games;
Watched his go up in flames.

One more bottle, and one joint,
Till we all reached the point.
he sat in our living room -
Poster boy for doom.

He jumped up the sofa,
And his tall drink glass flew.
"Here's a finger for you, Ma,
And, Dad, the other just for you!"

those angry words he left us,
Never called and wrote.
Somehow, the Lord kept us
From drowning, us afloat.

Years of dark clouds, and of rain,
No matter how I that stain,
I can't get it out,
red Kool-Aid on the couch.

one day, we got the call,
The call all dread.
"Sorry to to tell y'all,
But we found son dead."

All the heartache, and all the pain,
No matter how I scrub stain,
never get it out,
That red on the couch.
