On The Elephant Back

Somehow I don't remember when
I met her at the bus stop
She asked me for a cigarette
But she's never smoked at all

She spoke of wild times
but she wasn't more than seventeen
She wore run pantyhose
but she felt like a queen

I could sway in the rain on the elephant back
And you wouldn't deign a glance at me
I'm a white little sign on immaculate walls
And there's nothing left to do for me

She was there standin' on the doorway
Wearin' only a wet raincoat
In her hands only grains of sand
Dreams already gone

She asked me shelter for a while
'cause she was down on her knees.
And when I've tried to ask her why
She said something like this
