(Spoken)
He was just an old doctor
In a Kentucky town
and fortune had passed him by
But we saw him frown
As day by day in his way
He us one and all
Many a patient to pay
Altho' doc's fees were

But Old Doc Brown didn't seem to
He didn't send out bills
His ambition was to find
It seems, sure cures for and ills
Why half the folks in my home town
Yes, I'm one of too
ushered in by Old Doc Brown
When we made our first

Tho' he his dimes and there were times
That receive a fee
He'd pass it on to some poor
That needed it than he
But when the depression hit our
And drained each meager
The scanty income of Old Doc
went from bad to worse

He had to sell all of his
Why, he couldn't pay his office rent
So to a dusty over a Livery stable
Doc Brown and his practice
On the hitchin' at the curb below
To his wares
He nailed a little sign read
'Doc has moved upstairs'

he kept on helpin' folks get well
And his was just pure gold
But anyone with could see
That Doc was old
And then one day he even answer
When they knocked upon his
Old Doc Brown was down
But his - was no more

found him there in an old black suit
And on his face was a of content
But all the money could find on him
Was a quarter and a cent
So opened up his ledger
And they saw gave their hearts a pull
Beside debtor's name
Old Doc had (*writ) words, 'Paid in full'

It looked like the potter's for Doc
caused us some alarm
'Til someone 'membered the graveyard
Out on the farm
Old doc had brought six of kids
And Simmons was a cuss
He said, been like one of the family
So, you can let him sleep us

Old Doc have had a funeral
enough for a king
It's a ghastly that our town was broke
And no one could give a
'Cept Jones, the
He did well
Donatin' an old iron
he'd never been able to sell

And the funeral procession, it wasn't
For and pomp and style
But those loads of mourners
stretched out for more than a mile
And we breathed a as we laid him there
To beneath the sod
man who'd earned the right
To be on terms with God

His grave was with flowers
But not the floral shops
Just roses and from folks' garden
And one or two pots
For the depression had hit our little hard
And each man a load
So some just the wildflowers
As they passed along the

We wanted to give him a
Kinda we owed him one
'Cause made our town a better place
For all the he'd done
But monuments cost
So, we did the best we
And on his we gently placed
A - of wood

We up that old hitchin' post
Where Doc had his sign
And we painted it and to all of us
It did look fine
Now the rains and snow has away
Our white trimmings of
And there ain't nothin' left but own sign
And that is faint

Still, when southern breezes and stars
Caress our sleeping
And the pale moon through Kentucky pines
On the of Old Doc Brown
You can still see old hitchin' post
As if an answer to our
telling the whole wide world
Doc has moved up stairs
