When I was a man
About 21 years old
All I was a stripper girlfriend
And a Top Les Paul
Be careful of the things you for
You get 'em

There was a club in Dallas
Mother Blues
It's where Hopkins played
And Freddy King even payed dues

All the and gamblers
And young white hipsters, they all the scene
The at the door who checked ID's
Was 16

Aw, it was not a place for law citizens
Jackie Jones he had 'em a habit, he just stop
Aaid me 500 dollars
And I'll you my Les Paul God Top

I my daddy's car down to Ross Avenue
And I it
I guess I should have him
He eluded to the someone stole it

It was just the first of many bad
I was to make for the 20 years
Oh, but I had me a

Everybody
That the real
after the clubs close
What they after hours

It's 2 a.m. and everybody's
But the band, the dealers and Jack
And then the girls from the landing club come over
After they put their clothes on

So I'm at Ma and I'm sitting on an amp
I'm "Twist and Shout"
And this drink of water walks in
Like she have to shoot her way out

She come up to me and she
"You anything good on that guitar?"
I didn't say nothing, I just kept on
She said, "Have you heard this song
Called Polk Salad Annie?" I kept playing

She said, "Every I hear that song
My insides feel warm butter
And I just wanna take off my
And around in my underwear"

I said, "Down in
Where the grow so mean"
all I knew of it and it was enough

So we hit it off, me and this
We hit it off a metaphor
Like a metaphor for a bomb
We was enriched uranium, critical mass
We was a reaction, it was love and lust
Aw, mostly lust but a mutual

So there I was at 21 years old, I had it all
I had a fine stripper and a Gold Top Les Paul
Aw, the future, it looked
Oh but were dark clouds on the horizon

She was a beautiful
But she liked to Tequila and that ain't all
I home 4 or 5 times
And she pawned my Les

We broke up and she to Hollywood
She an actor

She got a job dancing on the Brothers TV show
And modeling lipstick Max Factor
I got over her, I'm she done alright
I'm she done alright, oh yes, I am

Well now me, I never busted the gates
the big time as a rock and roll star
For 40 years I just carried around an old Top guitar

But love and are mysterious things
In this funky old
It was 20 years ago I ended up
That Mother door girl

We had us a boy, 18 years old now, he's playing guitar
He ended up with that Les Paul Top, yes, he did
Now I don't if he's gonna hang his life on it or not
But I'm grateful for the time I get to share the stage with him

I'm grateful for the time I get to with musicians
Like George Reiff and Rick
I'm that I get to write these old songs
And travel the world and play them for people

And they out and hear me play
And the days I keep my gratitude
Higher my expectations
Well, I have good days
