Little Margaret, sitting at her hall door,
back her long, yellow hair,
When she saw William and his new-made bride
Riding the church so near.

She throwed down her comb,

It's day being and night coming on,

Little appeared all dressed in white,
at their bed-feet.

"How do you like pillow," she asked him,

But of all is that fair young maid
standing at my bed-feet."

Then night being and day coming on,
When most all men awake,
Sweet William how he's troubled to his soul
By a dream he dreamed last night.

"Such dreams, dreams, I do not like,
dreams, they are no good;
I dreamed my was covered with gore,
And my love a-swimming in blood."

So he called his man to go
And saddle the roan,
And he rode till he come to Margaret's house,
He rode to her alone.

"Is Margaret in her room,
Or is she in the hall?"
"No, Little Margaret's in her coffin,
With her pale turned to the wall."

Once he her lily-white hand,
And twice he her cheek,
Three times he her cold corpsy lips
And in her arms asleep.
