I was walking down 42nd one day, I wasn't workin'42nd I was walkin 42nd street. And amazing thing happened to me. It was July it was 89 degrees. It was hot, hot for New You know and I was walking and this person was coming west. And she had this big house dress on peppered all over little white daisies. She was almost bald but on top of her head, forehead you on her forehead was this fried egg. I thought was really unusual. Because in New York City the ladies the fried eggs on their heads generally come out September or October you know. Here was this lady this demented lady with a egg on her head in the middle of July. God a sight and ever, ever since I saw that not one day goes by that I don't think of her and I say to myself "Oh God, let me wake up tomorrow and to put a fried egg on my head. Oh God. "Then I say fast I say " Oh God, If by I should wind up with a fried egg on my head";cause sometimes you can't help things you know, you can't. I say to "don't let anybody notice."And I say real fast after that "if they do notice that I'm carrying that, that's not right and they want to talk about it, let 'em talk about it but let 'em talk so I can hear I don't to hear it." Cause the truth about fried eggs, you can call it a egg, you can it anything you like, but everybody gets one, people wear 'em on the outside, some they wear 'em on the inside.
We had an in the city. Me and my liked living there. It's been years since the kids grown, a of their own, left us alone.
John and live in Omaha. Joe is on the road. We lost in the Korean war. I still don't know what for, don't any more.
You know that old just grow stronger, and old grow wilder every day, but old people, they just grow for someone to say, "Hello in there. Hello"
Me and my husband, we don't talk anymore. He sits and through the backdoor screen. And all the news just repeats some forgotten dream that both seen.
I'll go and call up Judy. We worked at the factory. Ah, but what would I say when she asks what's Say, "Nothing, with you? Nothing to do."
You know old trees just grow stronger, and old rivers wilder every day, ah, but old people, they just lonesome for someone to say, "Hello in There. Hello."
So if walking down the street sometime and you should spot hollow ancient eyes, don't you pass by and stare as if you care. Say, "Hello in there. Hello."
