Gaze no more in the glass
The demons, with their guile,
Lift up before us when pass,
Or gaze a little while;
For a fatal image grows
That the night receives,
Roots hidden under snows,
Broken boughs and leaves.
For all turn to bareness
In the dim the demons hold,
The glass of weariness,
Made God slept in times of old.
There, through the branches, go
The ravens of thought;
Flying, crying, to and fro,
Cruel and hungry throat,
Or else they stand and the wind,
And shake their wings: alas!
Thy tender eyes all unkind:
Gaze no more in the glass.

And all the trembling flowers bear.
