A simple farmers daughter, so beautiful I'm told
Her parents died and left her with 500 pounds in gold
She lived with her uncle, the source of all her woe
As you will hear, this maiden dear did prove his overthrow

Her uncle had a plowboy whom Mary loved full well
'Twas in her uncle's garden their tales of love did tell
There was a wealthy squire who oft came her to see
But still she loved her plowboy

Her uncle rose one morning and then went straightaway
And knocked at her bedroom door,
And to her thus did say
